Reviews for Good to the Last Drop

When Good to the Last Drop first came out, I had some awesome reviews by some long time fans.

Sadly, I never had a chance to post these reviews.

Now that the new edition is here, time to have a party.

To start with, JD Cowan. Just some excerpts.
What makes these books so successful is how much fun they are. There are clear good guys and definitive bad guys, there is humor, there is plenty of action, there is a solid plot with developing characters, and the central romance is engaging. It's the sort of vampire tale not seen since at least the days of The Lost Boys when you could be serious and fun at the same time without insulting the lore or the audience. It also helps that the vampire mythos the story is built on is well established and builds off of concepts Bram Stoker used way back in Dracula and are given solid rules that must be obeyed. There are no glittering pseudo-vampires here.

As an end to the series, it's a suitable final chapter. Each book had slowly grown with scope and ambition leaving few places left for the series to go without devolving into self-parody. But the author avoids that trap by ending it at just the right point when the stakes hit critical mass. You will see carnage and death, and you will see if good really does ever win in this world of horrors. The last encounter is the final statement on all four books and the definitive last period on just what it is all about. I would argue the last few lines of the book sum it up even better, but I'm not going to spoil that.....

As it is, this is the best vampire series I've read. An engaging run from start to finish as each book improves on the last and finishes with a conclusive ending that wraps everything up neatly. If you've been waiting for vampires to be great again: these are the books you've been waiting for.
Good to the Last Drop, as well as the whole series, comes highly recommended. You can't get better vampire-related entertainment than this.

You can see why I wanted to hold onto that review until the latest version.

Then there was Lori's review.
If you thought the other books in the series were full of great fight scenes and characters, hold on to your hats, because this one is the best yet.

The fight scenes are a lot of fun, well done, and intense.  The characters are still convincing, compelling, and occasionally hilarious, in an understated, New-Yorker kind of way.  Marco and Amanda are full of their various faults, but loveable for them.

My favorite aspect about Amanda?  How many times can you watch a TV show or read a book with a “tough girl” who isn’t automatically an evil, catty, bitch?
....

Other than that rare feat of talented writing, the best part of this book is the way he managed to tie in the worldbuilding and the plot in a perfect end-of-the-series sendoff.  Without any spoilers, let’s just say that the idea of a good vampire that makes sense pays off magnificently at the end.  There’s a perfect juxtaposition of downright, pure evil on the one side, and rare, beautiful goodness on the other.
....... I think that's all I need to say here.

Buy the novel here.

Buy the series here.  Because it's out and it's complete.

Honor at Stake: The Paperback Edition

Honor at Stake is back!

.... Again.

For a third time.

The 2016 Dragon Award finalist for best horror is finally back in Paperback.

And we are ready to kick some ass! Yee haw...

Anyway...

The paperback is out just in time, really. It gives everyone time to purchase one of these snazzy new covers for DragonCon. Heck, it gives me time to get some for DragonCon. Either way, it works.

Meanwhile, I hope everyone is ready for the upcoming rerelease of the novel Good to the Last Drop. The grand finale of the series should be fun.

Heh heh heh.

Also, coming soon: Silver Empire is nearly ready to unleash something massive. I'll discuss that when there are more details.

But right now, here's Honor at Stake, in paperback.

Good to the Last Drop, Cover reveal

Here we go again. The last round of the rereleases.

It's been strange thinking that I've come out with a book a month for the entire year, and I haven't published anything new yet outside of short stories.

Then again, I'm going to keep publishing with new material starting September and going forward from there.

Right now, I hope everyone has read Honor at StakeDemons are Forever, and Live and Let Bite. There might be some minor spoilers along the way.

Anyway...

For those folks who were here the first time through will remember the original cover to book four, Good to the last Drop.  It was made by author Dawn Witzke, and looked something like this.

And, again, if you've finished Good to the Last Drop, you have some idea of why it looks like this. It was taken from the original batch of photos I made when doing Honor at Stake, at Mount Olivet cemetery in Queens... though that is technically not a spoiler.

Those of you who have read it already, you know why there's a red wolf there. You know why there's a sword. And you know why the location.

I never thought this one was perfect (the face on Amanda seemed a little off) but I was fine with it.

Now, we have a new publisher, a new artist, and a new cover.

The new cover is

Ah... dang, that redhead is hot....

I'm sorry, what was I saying?

Anyway, the art is solid. The model is attractive. I can even fit it into one of the scenes from the book. I even like the lens flair.

Though on the other hand, I recently had someone on Twitter tell me that the covers would probably make him bolt for the hills if it weren't for the fact that he was familiar with me and my work. Probably too much romance novel.

Um, guys, while I do see that you have a point, I would like to discuss what genre we're in. In a world where we have gunfights with the mafia, Vatican ninjas, vampires, SpecOps teams, flashbangs, MOABs, werewolves, and throwing Stars of David.

From what I can tell, there is no such thing as "urban fantasy thriller." However, the best genre that they DO have is "vampire suspense." Now that sounds like the proper genre for what we're doing.

Now, look at this photo of the top books in vampire suspense from a few months ago.

I will say again:

This isn't the genre vampire romance.

This isn't the genre vampire girl books.

This is the genre of vampire suspense.

Even though #4 was written by Lynsay Sands... a romance author.

But again, this is a snap shot of the top books in vampire suspense.

And, frankly, if I could turn your attention to the "creator" of the urban fantasy genre (no, not Bram Stoker, even though I'd make that argument), this is the cover of Laurell K Hamilton's earlier work, back when I would argue she was still a good urban fantasy novelist, as opposed to writing ... well ... bisexual furry orgy porn.

Image result for Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter

.... That's it. You couldn't tell that her costar in this book involved a mercenary named simply "Ted" who decided to hunt supernatural beasties because humans had become "too easy."

What about the comic book version of the same novel? Certainly, those have to be "better suited" to an urban fantasy series with enough guns that Hamilton and Larry Correia end up on the same gun panels.

.... Uh huh. Okay. Nevermind then.

So, if anyone has a problem with the new cover of Good to the Last Drop, well, take it up with Amazon's genre system. Because we're following the trend of cover art in a genre that should be perfect for us.

Also, again, the redhead is hot. And the art is nice, full stop.

Good to the Last Drop will be coming out within the next few weeks. And if you haven't read the previous books yet, here they are.

Live and Let Bite returns from the grave

My Dragon Award nominated novel for Best horror, Live and Let Bite, is back.

As the new write-up goes.
Marco is spiraling out of control.

He knows it. His team knows it. Everyone around him can see that he’s just a bomb waiting to explode.

The only woman who can bring him back from the edge is also the woman who lit his fuse. Ever since the demon Asmodeus tried to murder Marco, Amanda Colt has been hunting down every lead to find the true evil behind the attack. Her investigation uncovers a vampire assassin that Amanda has faced once before - and she lost. Stronger than anything they’ve face before, the assassin isn’t alone. As Marco flirts with self-destruction and the armies of Hell prepare to descend, they must come together to stop a thousand-year-old assassin that has never failed.

Even worse, they must finally face up to their feelings for each other!

I really enjoyed writing this one. I honestly did. I had more action, more pieces in play, and added several more layers to my vampire lore, and hey, while I'm at it, I even introduced the concept of minions, and how they can be weaponized beyond the usual bug-eating Renfields I usually come across in vampire fiction.

And best of all, I started pushing Marco over the edge. Because I do so love pushing my characters. "Hey, let me poke this one with a stick and see how he reacts." Hey, it worked with Kevin Anderson in the Codename series. And Marco is way more unstable far more often. Heck, there are days that I think the only thing stable about him is that he's unstable.

Not to mention that watching Marco and Amanda pound out their relationship issues was highly entertaining. When in doubt, remove all of the angsty BS, and get down to some more of the "fun" aspects of the relationship.

Though I will admit, it's strange to have women readers approach me online -- including romance authors -- and congratulate me on having such great love scenes where everyone is fully clothed. I had one person ask "If this is when everyone keeps their cloths on, I want to see what happens when you actually do a sex scene." (Hint: It won't look like a Bioware game.)

So, yeah, this one had Vatican ninjas and anti-vampire US SpecOps commandos (led by a were-wolfhound) versus an army of vampire minions who are themselves former mercenaries. If Renfield had an RPG, I suspect Dracula would have ended differently.

It was especially fun to write out more bits and pieces of Amanda's biography and reveal it to the readers.... Be warned, that link has spoilers. Hinting at expanding on Amanda's powers and abilities was also entertaining. But that's less for this book, and more laying the groundwork for the final fight in book four.

Not to mention that I had more fun with Jennifer Bosley, of the NYC Vampire's Association. I liked building up her relations with three other characters over the course of this one.

Oh, and the RPG attack on the hospital was a nice little shootout. Complete with creative ways to use nail guns and defibrillators.

So, Live and Let Bite is back. If you haven't already, now is your chance.

Good to the Last Drop: Best Horror in the Dragon Awards

The Dragon Awards are due in next week.

Yes, I know, I was taken aback as well. The earlier due date is probably due to giving more time for the vote count ... as well as whether or not some authors are going to be little babies and withdraw their nominations. Yes, I'm looking at you, Scalzi.

But yeah, on July 20th, the nominations need to be in.

I'd like to quickly discuss why Good to the Last Drop should be nominated.

The short version is that Honor at Stake and Live and Let Bite were both nominated for the Dragon Awards, and that Good to the Last Drop is even better, throwing in everything that came in before, on top of adding even more new elements.

The game-changer being my version of lycanthropy. Why? Because the best part, and the first part of these books that even I think comes close to horror, is biting Marco. Because the way I use lycanthropy is simple: it makes one's dark side physically manifest in the form of a furry quadruped predator.

And if you've read Love at First Bite, and met Marco Catalano. This is fun when you consider that Marco might be my darkest character short of being a super villain. Which is interesting when you consider that Sean A.P. Ryan will casually torture people for information, Kevin Anderson will torture politicians to death for the sake of vengeance.

Then I take Marco and I have him bitten by werewolves... causing him to lose what little control he has.

So, yeah, this book? This I could see as being horror. Because I don't think the vampires are that scary. I don't think that external threats are that creepy.

But take original sin, expand it to the point where the darkness within one person, unchecked, can reach out and threaten the people one loves? That's at least interesting.

So ... yeah, I recommend Good to the Last Drop for the Dragon Awards in best horror. If you haven't read it yet, then I'm sorry -- but it's coming back in August, so don't worry. If you GttLD, then please vote for it.

If you haven't .... maybe vote for it if you don't have a horror pick, then read it for the rerelease and see if it's as good as I think it is.

NEW RERELEASE: Demons are Forever

I would like to announce that Silver Empire has rereleased my novel, Demons are Forever.

I'm certain at this point there are least of few people who are going "I've never heard of this book. How is this a rerelease? I have to buy Demons are Forever right this minute."

While I am loathe to say "do NOT buy something," please hold on a second before buying Demons are Forever.

It used to have a different title.

But Murphy's Law of Vampires was a slightly too-long title.

And Demons are Forever as a title for book two works better with the title of the next novel, Live and Let Bite.

If you've never read it -- or need a refresher....
After saving Brooklyn from a nest of vampires, Amanda Colt and Marco Catalano are a little banged up. He's been given a job offer to deal with vampires in San Francisco, and it's a tempting offer - it would get him away from Amanda, his feelings for her, and get her away from the darkness inside him. When a death in the family compels Marco to move to the West Coast, they're both left to fend for themselves.

Then the creature known only as Mister Day leaves their world in tatters, and they must once more join forces against the darkness. Only Day is no vampire, but a creature beyond their experience. It will take the combined might of Marco, Amanda, and all of their allies just to slow it down. They have no weapons that can kill him. They have no way to imprison him. To even fight him is death.

But they have to try - or face the end of everything they love.

The Love at First Bite Series
Honor at Stake (ASIN B07CS11F97) - 2017 Dragon Award nominee for Best Horror Novel!
Demons are Forever (ASIN B07D2DF4TM)
Live and Let Bite (Coming July 10th!) - 2017 Dragon Award nominee for Best Horror Novel!
Good to the Last Drop (Coming August 14th!)
So, if you want to look at the newly edited works, or if you've never seen it before, now's the time to jump on board.

This was fun and funny for me for several reasons, including the criticism that Honor at Stake didn't have a big enough threat as a primary villain .... which is funny, since the enemy in HAS needed a magical ninja operative, a 100 year old vampire, and a genius martial artist to subdue him, and that last one had an arm, a leg, and several ribs broken / cracked / shattered.

It was funny because I had already created the next creature for Demons are Forever, Mister Day.

Heh heh heh.

Enjoy.

And since we have two out of four as a Dragon Award nominated novel, I figure I should mention that the Dragons are coming. If you don't have your ballot filled out already (either IRL or in your head,) here's my list. It includes the lists of other people, so there are options.

The Dragon Award nominated Honor at Stake is Undead Once More

You'd think with all my experience on Twitter, I'd have more pithy titles.

Anyway, yes, Honor at Stake is back. The Award nominated book is possibly the best thing I've ever done. If you don't believe me, look at the sixty-seven customer reviews.  That's right, sixty-seven. Screw you, Goodreads.

This is, of course, just the beginning as we build up to the release of Good to the Last Drop in August, to (hopefully) dovetail with the Dragon Award nomination.

I figure that after book one got nominated, and book three got nominated, book four is a shoe-in. But here's hoping. (You can make that a reality by clicking here and filling out the nominations ballot).

If you're new here and you're wondering "What the heck is he boasting about?" ...

The first thing I should tell you is that I'm not boasting.
  • I've got old school Dracula vampire rules meets Thomistic Philosophy and microbiology.
  • I've got the psychology of combat, good versus evil, moral grey areas and a little bit of Original Sin just for kicks.
  • Nothing sparkles unless it's on fire.
  • Flame throwers
  • Holy water squirt guns
  • Exploding stakes
  • Bouncing Betties for vampires
  • Death by underwire mesh
  • Decapitation by rosary
  • Communion wafers as suicide pills
  • Vatican ninja commando units.
We won't go into the street gangs, minions, the mafia, cops versus vampires, or when the FBI and the CDC get involved.

And that's just the first half of the first book.

I won't even mention what happens in the second half.

The official write-up.
A 2016 Dragon Award Nominee for Best Horror Novel!
One is a heartless, blood thirsty killer. The other is a vampire.

College freshman, Amanda Colt knows few people and wants to know fewer still. She enjoys fencing and prefers facing a challenge every once in a while. She is beautiful, smart, and possibly the most interesting person on campus...and most people stop after the first adjective.

Then she finds Marco Catalano in her fencing class. He is tall, attractive, and very intense. With a mind like a computer and manners of a medieval knight, he scares most people. Except Amanda. They both have secrets, for they are both monsters.

As they draw closer, they must find the line between how much they can trust each other, and how much they can care for each other. Each carries a secret that can destroy the other. They must come to grips with their personal drama soon, because a darkness is rising. Bodies are turning up all over New York, and an army of vampires is closing in on all sides.

They have only one hope ... each other.
And of course, it gets better. Coming in June, Demons are Forever. Formerly called Murphy's Law of Vampires.

Why the name change? Because it fit better on the cover, fit better with book three (Live and Let Bite), and because it's cooler.

The only reason that this wasn't nominated for a Dragon Award was that I asked everyone to fire for effect on book three, Live and Let Bite (which will come back in July)

This is going to be awesome, and we are going to kick so much ass this isn't even funny.

After you buy Honor at Stake ($.99 for the rest of today, Tuesday, May 8) to see the awesome rewrites and edits made to it, as you wait for it to download, vote for Good to the Last Drop in the Dragon Awards.

This will be epic.

Love at First Bite will be DOA on Monday

Dang, this has been a busy week. Venus came out this week. A Pius Stand came backthis week. I almost forgot to mention what was going away next week.

Just a friendly reminder, but my Dragon Award nominated series Love at First Bite will be temporarily off the shelves as of this Monday, February 19th. Please remember, my friend and publisher Russell Newquist will be rereleasing them over the summer.

There are several good reasons to buy these books. First and foremost being that Silver Empire may not release them in paperback. I'm sure you're thinking "Duh, why would they? No one buys hard copies anymore."  Well, I do, and so do some of my readers. So if you care about such things, you should probably grab them why you can.

Not to mention that Silver Empire will be redoing the covers. So, as of Monday, these will all be collector's editions.

Finally ... well, the Dragon awards for 2018 are open for voting. If you've voted for the previous editions to make it to the Dragon awards, and want to read Good to the Last Drop before it becomes unavailable, this is your last shot.

This is the first one, the Dragon Award nominated work. It also took second place in Sad Puppies 4, for whatever that is worth. I figured I would do ... a lot of smartass routines around vampires, playing games with the lore, while staying as true to it as I could.

I suppose you could say I weaponized my degree in Catholic philosophy. Who knew that it could come in handy?

One is a blood thirsty monster. The other is a vampire.

College freshman Amanda Colt knows few people and wants to know fewer still. She enjoys fencing and prefers facing a challenge every once in a while. She is beautiful, smart, and possibly the most interesting person on campus...and most people stop after the first adjective.

They have only one hope ... each other.
THIS BOOK WILL BE RETURNING SOMETIME IN MAY. PERFECT SUMMER READING.

It was amusing when I saw that one of the biggest criticisms of book one was that the vampires were too easy to dispatch in the final battle. I thought that given the artillery I brought down on them was fairly sufficient.

But I also laughed my ass off for one very good reason: Mister Day.

I won't say I'm particularly proud of this villain. Finding a way to kill him was the biggest problem, especially considering his various and sundry powers and abilities.

.... But I managed.
After saving Brooklyn from a nest of vampires, Amanda Colt and Marco Catalano are a little banged up. He's been given a job offer to deal with vampires in San Francisco, and it's a tempting offer – it would get him away from Amanda, his feelings for her, and get her away from the darkness inside him. When a death in the family compels Marco to move to the West Coast, they're both left to fend for themselves.

But they have to try, or face the end of everything they love.
Only slightly melodramatic. Largely, I think this underplayed the threat.

THIS BOOK WILL BE RETURNING SOMETIME IN JUNE 2018.

I had to use the title. I really did. I didn't have much choice in the matter. I love me some puns ... if you didn't realize that from the Pius trilogy.

This is the other book in the series nominated for best horror. I'll say again, I'm not entirely certain that I see how these are "horror" novels, though there are several reviews that make me thing I scare the bejeezus out of more than a few.

Then again, I did show much concept of minions...

I also had an off page, vaguely implied lesbian rape sequence...

Okay, maybe there were one or two vaguely scary things here and there.
Merlin "Merle" Kraft has been fighting the darkness for months. He left San Francisco in the capable hands of Marco Catalano and his anti-vampire team to defend them against vampires. With special operators at his command, Kraft has been killing every vampire he can find in the Middle East. After clearing out a nest in Tora Bora, he is finally brought back to New York, and the investigation that led him to vampires in the first place.

Marco is starting to spiral. He knows it. His team knows it. Everyone around him can see that he's just a bomb waiting to explode. The only woman who can bring him back from the brink is also the woman who lit his fuse.

Ever since "Mister Day" tried to murder Marco, Amanda Colt has been hunting down every lead to find the ones ultimately behind the attempt. After months of investigation, she learns that something in the dark is colder than the dark. It is a vampire assassin that Amanda has faced once before .... and last time, Amanda lost. This assassin is stronger than anything they've face before, and it isn't alone.

With Marco ready to self-destruct, and the armies of Hell ready to descend, the three of them must come together and stop a thousand-year-old assassin that has never been stopped, and has never failed to kill her target.
THIS BOOK WILL BE RETURNING SOMETIME IN JULY 2018.

In all honesty, I suppose I could just ask every reader on this page to go forth and vote for this book in best horror, or even fantasy, but ... eh. Not really. I'd much rather people read it, like it, and vote for it.

I'm figuring that this year or next year is going to be my last shot at even getting nominated for the Dragons. There were over 8,000 people who voted in last year's Dragon Awards. If all of them vote to nominate this year? I may have all the nominations I'm going to get

But I'm going to keep trying. This works for horror this year, and I have a horror novel coming up that was supposed to be Urban Fantasy ... I kinda wrote a horror novel by accident. Oops.

Anyway, this is your last shot to get it before the Dragon Award nominations. The good news is that if I do get a nomination, the book will be back on the shelves just in time.
The final war is about to begin, in this conclusion to the Dragon Award Nominated series

Merle Kraft, Marco Catalano and Amanda Colt have battled against the mythical Council, a supernatural conspiracy that monsters fear. This war has brought them up against vampires, minions, and demons from Hell.. Along the way, they have accumulated allies among the police, the military, the mafia, college students, lowly street gangs, and even other vampires.

Marco and Amanda have overcome their biggest terror -- their passion for each other.

But now, they face the final threat, one that is the culmination of every threat before them. This creature from Hell has powers beyond anything they've ever seen before, and has allies of his own: including SpecOps minions, an army of vampires, and packs of werewolves.

And that was before Marco got bit.

And, while I think of it, enjoy the Dragon Award nominations.

Good to the Last Drop, Chapter 1: A Little B&E Between Friends

We're here. At long last. The grand finale to Love at First Bite.

If you're wondering "Why are you stopping here?" the answer is simple: Because this is as far as my main villain will take me. Any longer, and the threat is just going to become ridiculous. Unless I don't hit it here. Because trust me, these odds are ... bleak.

I try to change things up in every book. And this villain is built upon everything I've done before. Minions? We've got minions. Vampires? We have vampires.

Demons? That would be telling.

Anyway, preorder the book here, and get ready for things to get strange.

Okay, stranger.

Chapter 1: A Little B&E Between Friends

December 15th, New York City

Merle Kraft’s midnight-blue eyes took in the office with a simple glance. The room was neat and orderly. The desk faced the door, and behind it were the large windows that made up the outside wall, giving a perfect view of Turtle Bay and the borough across the water—Brooklyn.
Ah, the memories… Wait, what am I thinking? I haven’t even been on this case a year. Where the hell did the time go? To Hell, almost literally.
Merle shook his head and turned his thoughts back to the situation at hand. After all, he was standing in the offices of the United Nations Secretary General. It was quite a view from a flat and uninteresting office, overlooking the East river, and looking at the next borough. The view was better looking than the bare bones office—chairs and desk, but thousand dollar desks and hundred dollar chairs. Who knew you could be so bland, yet spare no expense?
Unfortunately, despite his facility with B&E, Merle didn’t even know where to start looking. The files he desired weren’t to be left in a file cabinet, or even in plain sight. Assuming, of course, that he kept files on that sort of thing. The smart thing would be to just disappear everything.
And run. I would run. But then, I wouldn’t have made deals with demons and vampires in the first place, so who knows what they were thinking.
Merle moved through the room with his usual efficiency and grace. People often wondered just how he got through locked doors as though they weren’t there and find things that no one else knew how to. If anyone else knew the secret, they didn’t talk.
Thankfully, Merle also didn’t work with anyone, otherwise they would be making fun of his B&E costume: a blue windbreaker that matched his eyes, and blue jeans. His idea of undercover attire was wearing a windbreaker without FBI emblazoned on it.
Having fun with your search, brother?”
Merle leaped from the middle of searching the desk and spun to meet the gaze of his half-brother Dalf. The darker Kraft brother was swathed in black, as usual, complete with his wolf’s head silver-topped cane. The wolf’s head on the cane had eyes of rubies. The cape swirled around Dalf like he was Batman, and Merle once again examined the Boston Kraft brother for vampire fangs.
Dalf smiled, just to show that his bright white teeth were perfectly normal, blunt human teeth. Merled never seen them bloodstained, but it didnt hurt to check. Nope, not a fleck. Check.
The Eurasian ignored his Black Irish half-brother, turning away with a sigh. “I’m busy, Dalf.”
He nodded, taking in the room with a sweep of his eyes. “I see. Having an enjoyable evening of it? Or have you been frustrated in your endeavors?”
Merle gave him an eye-roll. Dalf wouldn’t go away until he played along. “What do you want?”
Dalf flowed along the room, but not moving closer, most likely just to keep his brother uncomfortable. Then again, he always did like manipulating me… and everyone else.
How have your investigations been going?”
Circular. Why?”
I hear that the government has been using wire taps on the United Nations.”
Blink. No one was supposed to have heard about that. Not even the New York Times had leaked it yet. “Indeed?”
Yes, I suspect this case has been bugging you, lately.”
Merle didn’t even react. Did my brother just suggest I bug the secretary general’s office? “You’re being helpful again, Dalf; why?”
The Boston Kraft brother narrowed his eyes, and gave Merle a smile that reminded him a little of Marco Catalano. “Because I can’t be the one to kill you if a vampire drains you first.”
* * * *
December 17th, New York City

Amanda Colt, vampire, sat on her couch, nose buried in the pages of a book on modern politics. It wasn’t so much that she needed the distance to read—in fact, she could read it from the other end of the room. It helped her forget that she was alone, in her apartment … especially when she would rather be in San Francisco, with Marco.
At his bedside, in the hospital.
But no, Jennifer Bosley wanted to see her, and had to see her “as soon as possible.”
Then she was told to wait.
Argh.
She wanted to scream. But screaming would give the neighbors the wrong idea. What a shame.
Amanda and Marco had finally made it. He loved her. Shed told him that she felt the same about him. Shed even told him her real name … assuming the pain killers hadn’t totally knocked him out.
Frustrated” didn’t really even begin to encompass it.
So she read. Since she left San Francisco, she had read twenty books. A day. And went to Mass each night. It was good enough for saints and monks, it would have to be good enough for her.
Have you gotten to the queen of the damned, yet?
Amanda started, leaping out of her chair and halfway across the apartment before she realized who had broken into her place—the only person who had ever done so without being eaten.
The red-golden-haired vampyre smiled gently. “Hello, Merle. How are you?”
The San Francisco Kraft brother nodded, and walked towards her. His hands stayed in his dark blue windbreaker. “I’m well. I’ll be damned if I can figure out exactly what’s going on over at the UN right now, but I’m working on it.”
Amanda reached back and gently put the bookmark back in the book. “Have you considered bugging the UN offices?”
He raised a brow and smiled slightly. “Funny you should say that, someone else just suggested it tonight as well. What do you think about the matter?”
The vampyre shrugged. “I have not been thinking about it. It has been…odd lately, that is all.” She sighed. “Have you had any success using Marco as bait yet?”
Merle blinked, surprised that she would even need to ask him about it one way or another. “He hasn’t told you?”
She sat down and picked up her book again. “We have not talked since I left. Cell phones and hospitals do not mix.”
Merle shrugged and moved to the nearest chair, wrapping the toe of his shoe around the chair and pulling it into position so he could sit. “First time I met you two, I figured you were at least dating, if not exchanging bodily fluids… then I discovered you were, just not the ones I had in mind. You were inseparable, and not to mention that neither one of you gave a damn about personal space.”
She allowed a corner of her mouth to curl into something like a wry smile. “Vampires generally do not acknowledge personal space. It makes it easier to eat their date.”
He rolled his eyes and sighed. Deflection was something he didn’t have time for, and as far as he was concerned, neither did she. “Give me a break, Amanda, I know you better than that, and so does Marco.”
Amanda’s eyes snapped up to meet his and the book slammed shut with what sounded like a rifle shot. “Really? You think so? Do you know how many people I’ve killed?”
Merle’s brows arched. “Do you know how little I care?”
She completely ignored the jibe. “I terrorized half the Red Army during the Revolution. I was used as propaganda against the Whites—a whisper about a demon working against the progress of Revolution. I did not even think for months, killing people to feed my hunger, feeding off Lenin’s army. I am a predator who had to retrain herself to be a human being.”
He scoffed. “Do you know how little Marco cares?
She continued without regard for his comment. “Most vampires are incontinent—sometimes they are merely lesser evils because they are like a lot of humans. They do not think, they just act. Only the thinking ones can be true evil or good.”
Merle nodded slowly, seeing that he would have to give in to the situation and actually address her concerns. “And you’re afraid that one of these days, your instincts will take over?”
Amanda could feel her blood pressure go up without her trying to make it do so. The last person who had gotten her this mad was Marco. The little wizard wasn’t going to leave her alone on this, was he? “What part of ‘I want to kill something’ don’t you get?” she snapped.
He inclined his head. “You want to tell me that in English this time.”
She blinked, not realizing that she had shouted at him in Russian.
Merle continued. “It at least explains a few things about you.” He smiled. “I always wondered why you were so much weaker than every major creature we’ve come up against. Nuala damn near killed all of us without even blinking. We won’t even go into Mister Day.”
She shrugged. “So what? I am not virtuous. I am, at best, Continent. I know what the good is, want it, and do it. Most of the time. But is it enough? Is it the right thing?
He shook his head. “No, you’re not just anything. Rory is continent, and he flinches at crosses if he doesn’t brace himself. But you pray, you wear crosses. But I know why you don’t have a power level commensurate with your level of virtue. You’ve been scared out of your mind by the level of power you might access. The nuns called it fortitude.
Merle’s eyes narrowed and he leaned forward. “You never asked what more you could do, never tested yourself to see how far you could go. Never tried to see if you could reach beyond what powers you’ve displayed thus far. You’re scared of your instincts, terrified of yourself and what you can do if you actually let yourself go deeper. Maybe you’re scared of your power, what you’ll become if you tap into it. As C.S. Lewis noted, if you don’t want it, it’s usually a good sign that you’re probably the right person to have it.
Merle stood and smoothed out his windbreaker. He gave her a look that brooked no dissent. “I don’t give a good God-damn what your supposed instincts are saying. You’ve spent decades at least on the side of right. Since you enjoy citing Aristotle so often, remember that thing about habits. It’s unlikely that you’re going to make a sudden and drastic U-turn and become another Nuala.
Perhaps you should ask yourself how you were able to so easily turn to mist and use it as a tactical weapon last week. I think you could figure it out if you put your mind to it.

As far as your boyfriend, not only is Marco a big boy, he can probably kick your undead ass should you step out of line.” He sharply tugged at the bottom of his windbreaker. “Like it or not, you’re in love with him, and I can only assume that, what I can read from a creature like Marco, is that he may even love you, too. Get over it.”

Love at First Bite, part 4, is Coming

Book 4 of my Love at First Bite series is coming. It might be titled Good to the Last Drop, but I have a few other suggestions going the rounds.

Here's the only problem I have.

I need a title.

I've already started a survey in my group on Facebook, as well as on my Facebook page, asking for suggestions. And I've gotten a lot of feedback.

I'm actually surprised, especially with some of the ones suggested for me.

Good to the Last Drop is currently winning, and I didn't even suggest this one. It's pulled ahead, and I can't believe it didn't occur to me. My family has been making this joke AT blood banks for years.

Greenwich Village of the Damned -- one of mine, and suggested by a chapter title.

Final Blood -- Book 4 will be the end to the main arc of the series. So "final" in the title has a good ring to it. Also, it's a take on First Blood -- you know, the novel that started John Rambo on his career.

Shadow of Murphy -- I originally suggested this because there are elements of Murphy's Law of Vampires that resonate in this novel. I won't say what, because that might spoil the surprise.

Certain Parts of Brooklyn -- This is actually taken from an exchange in the film Casablanca.

Major Strasser to Rick: Are you one of those people who cannot imagine the Germans in their beloved Paris? ....How about New York?
Rick to Strasser: "Well there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade."
Bloody Love -- a original title, suggested by on of my acquaintances.

Murphy's Shadow -- another suggestion, and probably better than "Shadow of Murphy," if only so the cover artist can have most of the cover dedicated to the image.

Army of Light -- I've always liked the imagery of the term, used in Babylon 5. No one else does, apparently.

Shadows of Day -- This works for reasons.

At the end of the day, I suspect most of the titles will be used. Why? Because I'll stop needing titles after I run out of novels.

Live and Let Bite Roundup

So, in case you're new here, and wondering what this Live and Let Bite is that's all over the blog, let's back track a little bit, all the way to the beginning, if you like.

There is, of course, book 2, Murphy's Law of Vampires, which tackles demons, San Francisco, an blowing up even more damage to public places.

And now, there's Live and Let Bite
The third in the Dragon Award nominated series, Love at First Bite.
Merlin “Merle” Kraft has been fighting the darkness for months.

Everyone around him can see that he’s just a bomb waiting to explode. The only woman who can bring him back from the brink is also the woman who lit his fuse.

Ever since the demon Asmodeus tried to murder Marco, Amanda Colt has been hunting down every lead to find the ones ultimately behind the attempt. After months of investigation, she learns that something in the dark is colder than the dark. It is a vampire assassin that Amanda has faced once before, and Amanda lost. This assassin is stronger than anything they’ve face before, and it isn’t alone.

With Marco ready to self-destruct, and the armies of Hell ready to descend, the three of them must come together and stop a thousand-year-old assassin that has has never been stopped, and has never failed to kill her target.
This book is going to be awesome. How awesome?

I'm almost certain that Live and Let Bite will take Best Horror at the Dragon Awards. Why? Pure logic on my part....

And if you think that logic has anything to do with awards, I have a bridge to sell you. Heh.

There was the cover reveal. Nice cover, huh?

Then I showed a bit of chapter 4, where our hero was ... a little cranky.

Chapter 6 saw how the world of the supernatural coincides with the real world

Chapter 5 gives you a sense of just how dark this will get.

And, there is, of course, the playlist for the novel.

And, now, there's really nothing more to do than to suggest you try buying these books and enjoy.
